Fattoria La Massa is situated in the hills of Panzano, in the prestigious ‘Conca d’Oro’ (Golden Basin) of the Chianti Classico DOCG zone. The property covers 45 hectares and has been producing wine since the fifteenth century. La Massa was purchased by its current owner, Giampaolo Motta in 1992. Giampaolo, originally from Naples, left his family’s leather business and came to the area in 1989 to follow his dream of making a high quality wine. He trained at various well-known estates in the Chianti Classico area (Riecine, Zonin and Castello dei Rampolla), seeking the right place to make his dream come true. He has also spent time in Bordeaux, under the tutelage of well-known wine consultant Stéphane Derenouncour, which is where many of his winemaking ideas and techniques come from. In 2008, he started collaborating with Stéphane at La Massa.
The beautiful 2019 Giorgio Primo is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. Vintner Giampaolo Motta’s inspiration is the great wines of Bordeaux, and his vision has never changed despite many passing trends. But perhaps his most important choice as a winemaker (born outside of Tuscany) is his firm commitment to Panzano in Chianti as the ideal home for the French grapes he cultivates. An exciting new Merlot is also in the works, so stay tuned. This is an etched and polished wine with dark fruit, spice, graphite and pencil shavings. The tannins are beautifully managed, and the wine is long and complex. Wine Advocate 97+
