Description

Woody Farm & Winery is located in Kaminoyama, Yamagata (Northeast part of Japan Honshu). It was established in the year of 1997, and as its name tells you, they have two "faces": Farm and Winery. There are two stories about the origin of the name "Woody". One said it is because the facility is surrounded by nature. Another said it comes the owner's family name Kimura 木村, which means wood village. (Unfortunately?) Nothing to do with the famous celebrity Kimura Takuya. The family has been growing grapes, cherries and pears in the area, using the traditional tall trellised method. The history of the farm traces back all the way to 1950's when the 1st generation started growing cherry and grapes in the area, and started to supply winemaking grapes to domestic wineries since 1974. The vineyard of Woody Farm & Winery is in the Zao mountain ranges. The current size at 4.8 hectares, producing around 30,000 bottles every year, only using grapes harvested in their own vineyards. The first vintage of their domaine wine was released in 2013.

Only 0.9 hectare of Chardonnay from this specific site of Uenoyama, blended with 5% of Petit Manseng. Average age of vine is 10-11 years old for the Chardonnay. Natural fermentation kicked off from the 11th day after whole bunch pressed in stainless steel tank. Completed MLF in April (harvest was in October November). Aged in the barrels for 11 months, 50% new oak barrels. The wine shows characters such as pear and apple, peach, vanilla and some nuttiness.
