Description

Edward Tyrrell planted his first vines in the Hunter Valley in 1858 establishing Tyrrell's Wines. His first vintage was in 1864 and by the turn of the century the land had became recognized as some of the Hunter Valley's finest vineyard land. The Hunter Valley was ideal for the production of premium wines, notably Shiraz in the reds and Semillon in the whites. These two varieties provided the basis for the beginning of the Tyrrell's premium Winemaker's Selection Range. From being a very traditional Hunter Valley winery, Tyrrell's have expanded their portfolio to include some excellent new wines from Victoria and McLaren Vale, under their Rufus Stone label. Vat 1 Semillon is fermented in stainless steel, spending a short time on lees in tank prior to bottling. It sees no oak.

The 2016 Semillon is a fresh, fruit-forward example of the genre. Green apple and lime juice notes dominate, while hints of crushed stone provide a pleasantly silky texture and extend through the long, mouthwatering finish. While some Sémillons age well, given this wine's fruit-forward nature, I'd opt for drinking it over the next few years. Wine Advocate 90 (2016)
