Description

In 1996, the Gaja family purchased a second property in Tuscany, Ca’ Marcanda, located in the Bolgheri district in the commune of Castagneto Carducci. The winery’s name comes from the Piedmontese dialect meaning “house of endless negotiations”. The 250 acres estate is characterized by two distinct soil types - terre brune (dark soil), predominately loam and clay, and terre chiare (white soil), which is richer in limestone and filled with stones and pebbles. The wines produced at Ca’ Marcanda are Promis, Magari and Camarcanda and 2000 vintage is the first release of these wines. As in his native Piedmont, Angelo Gaja’s goal is to produce wines that are true to their origins, reflecting the distinctive qualities of their unique terroir.

There is a lovely delicateness and softness to the 2016 Promis. The IGT appellation used here reflects fruit (a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese) sourced from Bibbona. The Promis has always seen Merlot in a leading role. This is a full and complete wine with nice roundness and bright freshness on the close. It is the most immediate and food friendly of these offerings from Ca'Marcanda. Wine Advocate 93 (2016)
