Description

While the primary style of Ningxia wines are oaky, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon-based reds, that isn’t all it produces. There are also winemakers who innovate, experimenting with small production. This is the case of Ian Dai who, with Xiao Pu (literally “small garden”), offers Natural Style / Low-intervention wines from Ningxia (and Yunnan) grapes. Ian Dai has lived in Shanghai for many years where he has been working in the wine industry as sommelier and wine educator. In 2017, after thinking about it for many years, he created his own wine, Xiao Pu.

XiaoPu is the project of enterprising small-batch winemaker Ian Dai, who—like Ma Jie of Petit Mont—is scouting China in search of its emergent terroirs and more interesting sites, using a range of facilities in which to make his wines. The 2019 Naked Syrah Marselan is a blend of 66% Syrah and 34% Marselan and has an attractive moderate purple appearance. On the nose, the 2019 Naked Syrah Marselan has lifted, perfumed fruit—this was cold soaked—showing violet-scented blueberry, black cherry and damson with a touch of white pepper in a bright, unoaked expression. There is also an herbal whole-bunch character (a touch of orange peel and Campari) with around 50% of each variety being whole-bunch fermented. On the palate, the 2019 Naked Syrah Marselan is medium-bodied with coating, chewy tannins, some bright acidity and well-integrated 13.2% alcohol. There’s a lovely core of ripe black and blue fruit with floral and herbal flavors. Although this is a style perhaps more suited to early consumption—that is, if you prefer the floral character not to slide off into geraniol—the quality means this wine will hold well for the next one to two years. It will certainly be fascinating to taste this again in a year’s time in case it can develop some positive tertiary character without losing the floral character (which may go from fresh violet to dried violet with age). However, this wine is entirely delicious now! With its longer length and significant concentration, this is one of China’s most exciting modern reds. Wine Advocate 92 (2019)
